Reflection for the 32nd Sunday of Ordinary Time

Seeking the Wisdom That Keeps the Lamp Burning

Reflection on Wisdom 6:12-16 and Matthew 25:1-13

This Sunday’s readings invite us to reflect on one of life’s most important questions: What are we truly preparing for? Both the Book of Wisdom and Jesus’ parable of the ten bridesmaids speak about readiness, vigilance and the cultivation of a relationship with God that sustains us through every season of life.

In the first reading, wisdom is portrayed as a precious gift that is eagerly seeking those who seek her. We are told that wisdom is “bright” and “does not grow dim.” Far from being hidden or reserved for a privileged few, God’s wisdom is available to all who genuinely desire it. The person who rises early to seek wisdom discovers that God has already taken the initiative. Wisdom is waiting at the gate, ready to meet those whose hearts are open.

Jesus develops this theme in the Gospel through the familiar parable of the ten bridesmaids. All ten are invited. All bring lamps. All wait for the bridegroom. Yet only five bring a supply of oil. When the bridegroom is delayed and arrives unexpectedly, the difference between the wise and foolish bridesmaids becomes apparent.

The oil in the lamps can be understood as all those things that nourish and sustain our faith: prayer, trust in God, love of neighbour, participation in the sacraments, acts of kindness and a living relationship with Christ. These are not things that can be borrowed from someone else at the last moment. Faith must be cultivated personally and patiently over time.

The Gospel is not intended to make us fearful, but rather attentive. Jesus reminds us that discipleship is not about predicting when the Lord will come; it is about living each day in a way that keeps our lamps burning. Every ordinary moment becomes an opportunity to grow in wisdom, deepen our faith and respond generously to God’s presence.

As we journey through life, may we ask the Lord for the wisdom that comes from above. May our hearts remain awake to His voice, our lamps filled with the oil of faith, and our lives ready to welcome Him whenever He comes.
